R, Matlab, Mathematica on FAS HPC Resources

An over-simplified abstract: R is for statistical programming, Matlab is for numeric scientific programming, and Mathematica is for symbolic scientific programming (computer algebra).

But there is considerable overlap between the software tools. Which is the best to use under specified circumstances & needs? And how are these tools best employed on the cluster Odyssey?
